Optimization Workbench: a Kafka simulator for a stalled migration

2025 - present

Challenge. Gas contracts were managed in Excel, causing constraint violations. The project to digitize them was hard to test because the middleware environment it depended on did not work reliably.

Solution. Built a Kafka simulator that replicates the middleware’s message flows, backed by integration tests running against Testcontainers.

Impact. Test runs stopped depending on an environment nobody could guarantee was up, development cycles got shorter, and the team was no longer blocked on middleware availability.

Energy trading platform, from scratch

2024 - 2025

Challenge. A 15-year-old Oracle platform had accumulated too much business logic to extend safely, and needed a credible replacement.

Solution. Designed a modern trading platform POC with an ingestion and retrieval architecture built for scale from day one.

Impact. Sustained 100,000+ trades a day with a visibly faster interface, and laid the groundwork for retiring the legacy system.

Forecasting engine for fleet maintenance

2023 - 2024

Challenge. Aircraft and engine maintenance was scheduled reactively, driving up downtime and cost.

Solution. Built a modular-monolith system ingesting aircraft, engine and lease-contract data and running a forecasting algorithm, designed to split into microservices later without a rewrite.

Impact. Increased asset availability and reduced maintenance costs.

Conference platform extended into native mobile

2022 - 2023

Challenge. A SaaS conference platform needed more features and native companions for attendees and sponsors.

Solution. Enhanced the core platform and shipped React Native apps with gamification, chat and QR scanning, published to the App Store and Google Play.

Impact. Supported 10,000+ attendees, increased engagement, and created new sponsor revenue opportunities.

Challenge. Device configuration data, warehouse parts inventory and multi-format imports had to be managed reliably in a regulated environment.

Solution. Developed a secure platform with data normalization, visualization, APIs and warehouse management.

Impact. Improved data reliability and streamlined spare-parts management.

Challenge. Data from 16 input systems had to be integrated and normalized for 15+ downstream systems.

Solution. Built a repository with normalization, indexing and multiple API and service endpoints for download, search and notifications.

Impact. Simplified setup and became the backend for multiple web platforms.

Laboratory instrument simulators, modernized without a handover

2014 - 2023

Challenge. Legacy simulators for laboratory devices needed modernizing and extending, with no knowledge transfer from the original developers.

Solution. Reverse-engineered the existing systems, migrated the UI from WinForms to WPF and built simulators for multiple device types, leading several teams over the years.

Impact. Every update shipped on schedule, and a simulator was released before the physical device, so hardware teams could optimize ahead of market launch.

2013 - 2015

Challenge. An enterprise-scale mortgage platform had to serve both customers and bank staff.

Solution. Built front-end and back-end as part of a distributed 20+ person team, covering both customer and bank interfaces.

Impact. A multi-million dollar platform that went on to win multiple industry awards.

Advertising SDK for Windows Phone

2012 - 2014

Challenge. An existing Android advertising SDK had to be ported to Windows Phone, conforming to the MRAID and VAST standards.

Solution. Developed an SDK optimized for limited device resources and platform limitations, in close collaboration with the other platform teams.

Impact. Delivered a robust, compliant SDK alongside the iOS and Android versions for an international client.
